Megyn Kelly has built a reputation on saying one thing and then doing another, often within the same news cycle. This week offered another example. She went after Karoline Leavitt, the new White House press secretary, with a sharp critique. Then, almost immediately, she turned around and defended her. The whiplash was not unusual for Kelly. It has become her pattern.
Earlier this year, she attacked the credibility of the so called Cornell 7, a group of students accused of rape, suggesting their story did not add up. At the same time, she insists she is a champion of women. That claim grows harder to take seriously with each new contradiction.
Kelly once occupied a clear role as a prime time Fox News host and a foil to Donald Trump. Now she operates in a strange space. She is not a reliable conservative voice, nor a consistent critic. She is a commentator who seems to react on instinct, then reverse course when the reaction does not land.
The result is a public figure defined less by principle than by whiplash. Her audience gets outrage, then apology, then outrage again. It is unclear where she goes from here, or whether anyone is still keeping score.
