Objective: This study aims to systematically assess the current prevalence of stigma experienced by individuals with schizophrenia and to provide evidence that highlights the urgent need for awareness and intervention strategies. Schizophrenia, a complex mental health disorder, often carries a significant social stigma that can adversely affect the lives of those diagnosed.
The systematic review and meta-analysis compiled data from multiple countries, revealing that stigma remains a pervasive issue across diverse cultures and societies. Patients frequently encounter discrimination, social isolation, and negative attitudes from both the public and healthcare providers. This stigma can hinder treatment access and recovery, leading to a cycle of marginalization.
The findings underscore the necessity for targeted public health campaigns to educate communities about mental health and to foster a more supportive environment for individuals with schizophrenia. Addressing stigma is crucial not only for improving the quality of life for patients but also for promoting a more inclusive society that understands and accommodates mental health challenges.
