Two psychologists, both 83 years old, recently celebrated a second bar mitzvah, an event that highlights a friendship and a shared commitment to lifelong learning. The ceremony came decades after each man first marked the traditional Jewish coming of age ritual at 13. This time, the milestone carried a different meaning, shaped by years of professional work in psychology and by the simple fact that they chose to prepare for it together.
Their story carries a lesson that it's never too late to make a new friend or too late to relearn something you first mastered 70 years ago. The two men studied the same prayers and texts they had learned as boys, finding that the material felt different through the eyes of adults with decades of experience behind them. What began as a personal challenge became a shared project, with each man pushing the other to keep going when the material felt difficult or the schedule grew demanding.
The celebration drew family and friends who watched the pair read from the Torah and reflect on what the ritual meant to them at this stage of life. Both men said the experience reminded them that growth does not stop at retirement and that curiosity can be renewed at any age. They also spoke about the value of companionship in later years, noting that their friendship deepened as they prepared together. The second bar mitzvah, they said, was less about repeating a childhood milestone and more about proving that learning and connection remain possible well into old age.
