A senior Ukrainian official has stated that NATO has effectively lost its long-standing psychological hesitation when dealing with Russia, pointing to the recent pattern of Alliance jets intercepting Russian aircraft near member borders. The comment comes nearly a year after the first confirmed incident where NATO forces shot down a Russian drone over Polish airspace.
According to the official, what was once considered an extraordinary and risky action has now become routine procedure. Alliance pilots and commanders no longer treat encounters with Russian military hardware as a reason for panic or excessive caution. Instead, they follow standard protocols for protecting NATO territory, which includes the use of force when necessary.
The official argued that this shift is not just about military readiness but also about a change in mindset. For decades, many Western leaders feared that any direct confrontation with Moscow could spiral into a larger conflict. That fear, the official suggested, has faded as Russia continues its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and repeatedly violates the airspace of neighboring states.
The first drone interception over Poland last year was seen as a turning point. At the time, it was described as a one-off event driven by extreme circumstances. Now, similar interceptions happen on a regular basis, with NATO jets scrambled to track or down Russian drones that stray into Alliance airspace, particularly near the Baltic states and the Polish border.
The Ukrainian official added that this new normal sends a clear signal to Moscow. It shows that NATO is no longer willing to accept accidental or deliberate intrusions without a response. While the official stopped short of calling for direct NATO involvement in the war, the statement reflects growing confidence among Kyiv's allies that Russia can be challenged without triggering a wider war.
