Educators and mental health professionals in Norfolk report a growing concern about how social media, smartphones and artificial intelligence are affecting students. During a Wednesday discussion, local psychologists said the impact is now clearly visible in classrooms and counseling sessions across the district.
The professionals noted that students are struggling with attention, anxiety and social skills at rates that appear linked to constant digital engagement. Smartphones keep students connected at all hours, often disrupting sleep and face to face interaction. Social media platforms amplify comparison and peer pressure, while AI tools are changing how young people study, write and solve problems.
One psychologist explained that many students now turn to AI for answers instead of working through challenges themselves. This can weaken critical thinking and reduce confidence in their own abilities. Counselors also see more students reporting feelings of isolation, even though they are constantly online.
The group urged parents and teachers to set clear boundaries around screen time and to encourage open conversations about what students see and do online. They stressed that early support, including school counseling and family involvement, makes a meaningful difference. While technology is not going away, the experts said adults must help students build healthier habits and stronger real world connections.
