As an aging hunter and outdoor writer, I have begun to look inward. I am one of the few old men who still deer hunt. I asked a psychologist why.
The question matters because the numbers are clear. License sales among older hunters keep falling. Knees give out. Friends quit. The woods fill with younger faces, or sometimes with no faces at all. So why do some of us keep going?
The psychologist did not hand me a simple answer. He talked about purpose, ritual, and identity. He said the hunt gives structure to the fall. It pulls a man out of the chair and into the cold. It asks for attention, patience, and silence. Those are not small things at any age.
He also said something that stayed with me. For many older men, the deer woods are one of the last places where they feel competent. Not retired. Not fragile. Just capable. A man who can read sign, sit still for hours, and find his way back in the dark still knows who he is.
I think he is right. The deer is not really the point. The point is the doing. The waking before dawn. The thermos. The same ridge. The quiet hope that today something might happen.
So I will keep going while my legs allow it. Not because I need meat. Because I need the woods. Because I need to be the kind of man who still goes.

And again. They swap one word, change it back, and hover over the send button while imagining every...
