Being ghosted hurts. The silence, the unanswered messages, the sudden disappearance of someone who once seemed invested. It is easy to assume the person on the other side feels nothing at all. But research suggests that assumption may be wrong.
Studies on why people cut off contact without explanation point to a more complicated picture. Many ghosters report feeling discomfort, regret, or even shame about their exit. They often avoid confrontation not because they lack a conscience, but because they dread the awkward conversation, the potential anger, or the possibility of being pulled back in. In some cases, they convince themselves that disappearing is kinder than a direct rejection, even when the other person experiences it as cruel.
That does not excuse the behavior. Ghosting leaves the person on the receiving end without closure, forced to guess what went wrong. But understanding the ghoster's side can shift the narrative from pure villainy to something more human. Guilt does not always prevent bad behavior. Sometimes it simply follows it, quietly, long after the phone has gone silent.
For anyone who has been ghosted, that knowledge may not heal the wound. Still, it offers a small correction to the idea that the other person simply did not care.
