A former safety leader at OpenAI has gone public with sharp criticism of the artificial intelligence industry, describing a culture where financial pressure and fear push companies to release powerful systems before they are fully understood. The insider, who once dismissed doomsday warnings about AI as exaggerated, said his view changed after witnessing how decisions were actually made inside the company.
He described an environment where commercial incentives repeatedly outweighed caution. According to his account, employees who raised concerns about safety were often met with resistance, while timelines for shipping new models took priority over careful evaluation. The mix of investor expectations, competitive anxiety, and the human tendency to dismiss unlikely but catastrophic risks created what he called a dangerous blind spot.
His warning echoes broader unease among researchers who argue that the race to build ever larger models has outpaced the ability to test them properly. He said the industry needs stronger external oversight, transparent reporting of incidents, and a willingness to slow down when evidence of risk appears. Without those changes, he argued, the same psychological and economic forces that shaped his former employer will keep pushing the entire field toward choices that are difficult to reverse.
