A forensic psychiatrist who never treated Lindsay Clancy is now raising concerns that her health care team missed clear warning signs before the tragedy. The expert reviewed medical records showing that Clancy reported auditory hallucinations in December 2022, just weeks before she killed her three children in their Duxbury home.
The psychiatrist, speaking in court documents, said those hallucinations should have triggered a much more urgent response from her providers. Instead, Clancy was sent home with medication and follow-up appointments that were too far apart given her deteriorating mental state. The records reportedly show a pattern of escalating symptoms, including severe anxiety, obsessive thoughts, and sleep deprivation, all of which were documented but not fully addressed.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, is charged with murder in the deaths of her children, ages 5, 3, and 8 months, in January 2023. Her defense has argued that postpartum psychosis, compounded by the side effects of prescribed medications, left her unable to distinguish right from wrong. The prosecution maintains she planned the killings.
The expert's testimony could be central to the trial, which is expected to focus heavily on whether her providers failed to act on clear red flags. Legal analysts say this line of argument shifts some blame onto the medical system, though it does not absolve Clancy of legal responsibility. The case continues to draw national attention to gaps in postpartum mental health care.
