AI Is Coming for Lawyers Before Plumbers

AI Is Coming for Lawyers Before Plumbers

For decades, the message to young people was clear: go to college, get a white-collar job, and avoid the trades at all costs. That advice, drilled into Generation X and millennials, is now being turned on its head. The rise of artificial intelligence is reshaping the workforce in ways that favor skilled trades over traditional professional paths.

A master electrician at 28 can now outearn a marketing graduate of the same age. While AI tools are rapidly automating tasks in law, accounting, and media, the work of plumbers, electricians, and welders remains stubbornly resistant to software. You cannot train an algorithm to snake a drain or rewire a fuse box. These jobs demand physical presence, problem-solving on the fly, and hands-on dexterity.

The shift is already visible. Law firms are using AI to review contracts and draft documents, cutting the need for junior associates. Meanwhile, trade schools report rising enrollment, and wages for skilled labor have climbed steadily as demand outpaces supply. The pandemic accelerated this trend, as remote work hollowed out downtown offices while construction and repair crews stayed busy.

The irony is sharp. The same generation that was pushed away from vocational training is now watching AI threaten the very careers they were told to pursue. For anyone advising a young person today, the old script needs a rewrite. The future may belong less to the corner office and more to the person holding a wrench.
